It seems Facebook is quietly rolling out a small piece of new technology that will make it easier to wade through the piles of "requests" users receive on a daily basis. A new "ignore all" button has shown up on the request pages of some accounts, making it possible to ignore entire classes of requests at one fell swoop:

The functionality hasn't been rolled out to everyone yet it seems, but for those of us that have it, it is making Facebook life marginally easier. I wonder what else Facebook may be playing with along these lines.

Do you have the "Ignore All" button?

SMX Advanced London is the only search marketing conference designed exclusively for experienced internet marketers. Sessions are fast-paced, Q&A-packed, frequently controversial, always informative…and don’t stop to cover the basics. Fluent in search engine marketing? Come to SMX Advanced and engage with others who speak your native language.

Here are the top tips that we’ve read from this conference:

1. Tweets are unknown currently as a SEO ranking factor but it’s likely that they soon will be because this is where most of the freshness of links is coming from.
2. There is a suspicion that data is not flowing from Facebook to Google. Bing on the other hand does have this relationship and therefore likely to see effect of Facebook on SEO here first but I think soon afterwards from Google. Remember, Facebook Fan pages are for businesses and Facebook groups are for events.
3. Search engines love ordered websites that have FAQs and help pages.
4. Plan for a crisis, it’s inevitable. Have press releases pre-written, PPC campaigns built, contacts at news desks on your team…so you can saturate the search engines quickly
5. All your blog posts should have an image. The image size should be standard sizes, e.g. 330 x 250. Always make the alt tag the same as your post title.
6. Consider how fast your website loads. Take out anything unnecessary. Good tool: http://tools.pingdom.com/
7. You may think Facebook ads are a pain (and they are) but with 400M users and a treasure trove of demographic targeting opportunities they can’t be ignored. One idea: Put name of competitor brand into Facebook ads to head hunt!
8. Concerned about people spying on your searching. Keep what you are searching to yourself. Use https://www.google.com.
9. Influencing people to link to you is the future of link building.
10. Should you use a keyword or brand name at the start of title tag? There is a strong correlation between keyword position and rankings, so compelling evidence for keyword first.

Over the past 10 years, Zappos.com, the company where I am CEO, has grown from almost no sales to over $1 billion in gross merchandise sales annually, driven primarily by repeat customers and word of mouth, while simultaneously making Fortune Magazine’s annual “Best Companies to Work For” list two years in a row. My first book, “Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose”, will be released on June 7, 2010. Below is an excerpt that describes the lessons that I learned from playing poker and how I apply them to the business world.

I’d played a little bit of poker in college, but like many people, I always just considered it to be a fun form of gambling and had never bothered to actually study it. Back in 1999, poker was not yet a mainstream activity. Most people had never heard of the World Series of Poker, and TV networks like ESPN were not yet broadcasting poker tournaments to the masses.

One night while battling insomnia, I randomly came across a Web site that served as a community hub for people who played poker regularly. I was fascinated by the amount of analysis and information about playing that was freely available, and spent the entire night reading different articles about the mathematics of poker.

Like many people, I had always thought that poker was mostly about luck, being able to bluff, and reading people. I learned that for limit hold ‘em poker (which was the most popular type of poker in casinos at the time), none of that really mattered much in the long run. For every hand and every round of betting, there was actually a mathematically correct way to play that took into account the “pot odds” (the ratios among the amount of the bet, the number of chips already in the pot, and the statistical chances of winning).

With the exception of poker, almost all games in a typical casino are stacked against the player, and in the long run the casino always comes out ahead. I was intrigued by poker because in poker you are playing against other players, not against the casino. Instead, the casino just takes a service fee for each hand dealt (usually from the winner of each hand).

In a casino, each poker table seats up to ten players. As long as at least one of the players is not playing in the mathematically optimal way (and usually it’s several players that aren’t), the players who are playing correctly will generally end up winning in the long run.

Learning the basic math behind limit hold ‘em poker was not actually that hard. I bought and studied a book called Hold ‘em Poker and started going to card rooms in California several times a week to practice what I was learning from the book. (Although California is a generally no-gambling state, card rooms are allowed because poker is not a game against the house.) Within a few weeks, I felt that I had mastered the basics of the mathematics behind playing hold ‘em.

Understanding the mathematics behind hold ‘em and playing against players who didn’t was like owning a coin that would land on heads one-third of the time and tails the other two-thirds of the time, and always being allowed to bet on tails. On any individual coin flip, I might lose, but if I bet on tails a thousand times, then I was more than 99.99 percent guaranteed to win in the long run.

Likewise, when playing a game against the house such as roulette or blackjack, it would be like being forced to always bet on heads: Even though you might win any individual coin flip, if you did it a thousand times, you would be more than 99.99 percent guaranteed to lose in the long run.

One of the most interesting things about playing poker was learning the discipline of not confusing the right decision with the individual outcome of any single hand, but that’s what a lot of poker players do. If they win a hand, they assume they made the right bet, and if they lose a hand, they often assume they made the wrong bet. With the coin that lands on heads a third of the time, this would be like seeing the coin land on heads once (the individual outcome) and changing your behavior so you bet on heads, when the mathematically correct thing to do is to always bet on tails no matter what happened in the previous coin flip (the right decision).

For the first few months, I found poker both fun and challenging, because I was constantly learning, both through reading different books and through the actual experience of playing in the field. I started to notice similarities between what was good poker strategy and what made for good business strategy, especially when thinking about the separation between short-term thinking (such as focusing on whether I won or lost an individual hand) and long-term thinking (such as making sure I had the right decision strategy).

I noticed so many similarities between poker and business that I started making a list of the lessons I learned from playing poker that could also be applied to business:

Evaluating Market Opportunities

Table selection is the most important decision you can make.

It’s okay to switch tables if you discover it’s too hard to win at your table.

If there are too many competitors (some irrational or inexperienced), even if you’re the best it’s a lot harder to win.

Marketing and Branding

Act weak when strong, act strong when weak. Know when to bluff.

Your “brand” is important.

Help shape the stories that people are telling about you.

Financials

Always be prepared for the worst possible scenario.

The guy who wins the most hands is not the guy who makes the most money in the long run.

The guy who never loses a hand is not the guy who makes the most money in the long run.

Go for positive expected value, not what’s least risky.

Make sure your bankroll is large enough for the game you’re playing and the risks you’re taking.

Play only with what you can afford to lose.

Remember that it’s a long-term game. You will win or lose individual hands or sessions, but it’s what happens in the long term that matters.

Strategy

Don’t play games that you don’t understand, even if you see lots of other people making money from them.

Figure out the game when the stakes aren’t high.

Don’t cheat. Cheaters never win in the long run.

Stick to your principles.

You need to adjust your style of play throughout the night as the dynamics of the game change. Be flexible.

Be patient and think long-term.

The players with the most stamina and focus usually win.

Differentiate yourself. Do the opposite of what the rest of the table is doing.

Hope is not a good plan.

Don’t let yourself go “on tilt.” It’s much more cost-effective to take a break, walk around, or leave the game for the night.

Continual Learning

Educate yourself. Read books and learn from others who have done it before.

Learn by doing. Theory is nice, but nothing replaces actual experience.

Learn by surrounding yourself with talented players.

Just because you win a hand doesn’t mean you’re good and you don’t have more learning to do. You might have just gotten lucky.

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

Culture

You’ve gotta love the game. To become really good, you need to live it and sleep it.

Don’t be cocky. Don’t be flashy. There’s always someone better than you.

Be nice and make friends. It’s a small community.

Share what you’ve learned with others.

Look for opportunities beyond just the game you sat down to play. You never know who you’re going to meet, including new friends for life or new business contacts.

Have fun. The game is a lot more enjoyable when you’re trying to do more than just make money.

Aside from remembering to focus on what’s best for the long term, I think the biggest business lesson I learned from poker concerned the most important decision you can make in the game. Although it seems obvious in retrospect, it took me six months before I finally figured it out.

Through reading poker books and practicing by playing, I spent a lot of time learning about the best strategy to play once I was actually sitting down at a table. My big “ah-ha!” moment came when I finally learned that the game started even before I sat down in a seat.

In a poker room at a casino, there are usually many different choices of tables. Each table has different stakes, different players, and different dynamics that change as the players come and go, and as players get excited, upset, or tired.

I learned that the most important decision I could make was which table to sit at. This included knowing when to change tables. I learned from a book that an experienced player can make ten times as much money sitting at a table with nine mediocre players who are tired and have a lot of chips compared with sitting at a table with nine really good players who are focused and don’t have that many chips in front of them.

In business, one of the most important decisions for an entrepreneur or a CEO to make is what business to be in. It doesn’t matter how flawlessly a business is executed if it’s the wrong business or if it’s in too small a market.

Imagine if you were the most efficient manufacturer of seven-fingered gloves. You offer the best selection, the best service, and the best prices for seven-fingered gloves–but if there isn’t a big enough market for what you sell, you won’t get very far.

Or, if you decide to start a business that competes directly against really experienced competitors such as Wal-Mart by playing the same game they play (for example, trying to sell the same goods at lower prices), then chances are that you will go out of business.

In a poker room, I could only choose which table I wanted to sit at. But in business, I realized that I didn’t have to sit at an existing table. I could define my own, or make the one that I was already at even bigger. (Or, just like in a poker room, I could always choose to change tables.)

I realized that, whatever the vision was for any business, there was always a bigger vision that could make the table bigger.

Facebook is a company that moves quickly, constantly innovating and launching new products to improve the user experience. The feedback we heard from users was that in our efforts to innovate, some of our privacy settings h ad become confusing.

We believe in listening to our users and taking their feedback into account whenever possible. We think the following changes address these concerns by providing users with more control over their privacy settings and making them more simple to use.

Starting today, Facebook will:

*

Provide an easy-to-use "master" control that enables users to set who can see the content they share through Facebook. This enables users to choose, with just one click, the overall privacy level they're comfortable with for the content they share on Facebook. Of course, users can still use all of the granular controls we've always offered, if they wish.

*

Significantly reduce the amount of information that must be visible to everyone on Facebook. Facebook will no longer require that users' friends and connections are visible to everyone. Only Name, Profile Picture, Networks and Gender must be publicly available. Users can opt to make all other connections private.

*

Make it simple to control whether other applications and websites access any user information. While a majority of our users love Facebook apps and Facebook-enhanced websites, some may prefer not to share their information outside of Facebook. Users can now opt out with just one click.

This week’s topic-du-jour-that’s-not-about-Lindsay-and-her-alcohol-classes seems to be about quitting Facebook, and how Mark Zuckerberg is, depending on who you talk to, the Devil, the Antichrist, or both. Even Calacanis jumped into the fray this morning with a post that made some good points.

Now, first off – understand – I’m not saying Zuck is right, or even a nice person. Quite frankly, someone needs to give him some CEO lessons really freaking quickly. But I believe that the uproar over quitting Facebook due to privacy concerns is overblown, and those quitting might come to regret it. Here’s why.

1) Perhaps most importantly, Privacy is only a problem if you’re posting seriously private stuff.

Let’s talk about how many times you were photographed by surveillance cameras this morning as you were driving in your car, picking your nose, and sipping your latte. Let’s talk about how stupid you looked last weekend when you hit on your friend’s girlfriend at that party when you were drunk, or about how you called your boss a douche when you were in the bathroom, and he was in the next stall. Guess what? NONE of that had ANYTHING to do with social media or Facebook. It had to do with YOU being a DUMBASS. Want to prevent Facebook from playing with information you don’t want shared? DON’T POST IT ON FACEBOOK. A photo of you with your mates on a boat sipping Moet is a lot less incriminating than later that night, when you were photographed doing blow off a stripper’s boobs. So let’s make it easy – If you’re going to do stupid shit, make sure you do it without cameras present. If you’re an idiot, and let cameras in, or if you get drunk and tweet, THIS ISN’T FACEBOOK’S FAULT. The Zuck may be a douche, and may be hell-bent on world domination, but it’s not his fault if someone catches you doing blow, and you lose your job over it. It’s also not his fault if you post fifty messages about how you love Twilight, and all of sudden, you start getting Twilight ads, and your friends make fun of you for it. Sorry.

2) The majority of stuff that’s being shared already isn’t that freaking important!

So what if Facebook tells Ray’s Pizza that I “like” their pizza fan page, and I live in NYC? If I live in NYC and go and fan Ray’s Pizza, it’s because I like their pizza to begin with! Facebook is free for us for a reason – Advertisers want to advertise to us! Who gives a shit if Ray’s now targets their pizza ads to me because they know I live in a certain zip code? All the targeted ads in the world won’t matter if I don’t want to buy the product! I don’t care if they’re advertising to me. What’s the big deal?

3) Hating Facebook is “in” now. But they’re not the only one!

I’m the Mayor of the New York Cat Hospital on Foursquare. That ALONE can tell an advertiser more about me than almost ANY action I take on Facebook. Any savvy marketer can cross reference what I’m doing on Foursquare and what stores or restaurants I’m going to, and determine a pretty decent path as to who I am. And we’re worried about Facebook? No! It’s just the topic du-jour.

4) Emulate Casey Stengel

Casey Stengel, one of the greatest managers the New York Mets ever had, was asked how to win baseball games. Stengel, master of the quip, said, “oh, just hit ‘em where they ain’t.” The opposite applies to Social Media. Hit them where they ARE. I don’t care HOW many people quit Facebook – It’s not going anywhere, and they’re still bringing on tons more new users each day. My belief? It’ll be acquired by/partner with Google, and that’ll be everything we do in life. And I’m totally fine with that, for the reasons listed here. In the end, it comes down to how we use the tools, anyway. Facebook has made it easy for my parents to post photos of their trip to Argentina to all of their friends. That’s not going away, and my parents, both really, really smart NYU professors, don’t worry about their privacy on Facebook, because posting photos of their trip to Argentina is about as busy as they get on Facebook. But that works FOR THEM.

5) Privacy died 30 years ago. It’s time to mourn and move on.

Seriously. Privacy died a long, long time ago. All that we have private nowadays is what’s in our heads. That’s it. If we paid $19.95 a month to Facebook, we’d have every right to bitch. But we don’t. We’re paying WITH OUR PRIVACY. We offer our information in exchange for the tools to help us live our lives. I’m totally fine with that! Yes, it’d be nice if Facebook was more clearcut with their privacy policies, and I believe they will be in the future – I’m reading articles about internal FB employees getting pissed with the changes – so I’m not worried about it changing – FB will get smarter about how they use your information – But they will continue to do it. And when you think about it, if you’re smart about it, you’re not giving them that much actionable information that a marketer couldn’t find somewhere else. So seriously – Relax. Post a photo of you and your friends on Facebook. It won’t ruin you. Just keep the blow out of sight. Or just give it to Lindsay.

This morning, members of the International Social Media Association received a surprising email from ISMA co-founder Mari Smith. In it, she announces that ISMA will be dissolved. And by dissolved we don't mean gently eroded over time – we mean effective tomorrow!

Though Smith refers to "many reasons" for the decision she remains vague on any one of them in particular. I'm certain the next few days will such much speculation and that folks will be scrambling for "inside info."

The formation and existence of ISMA has not been without controversy. Many respected industry professionals have publicly aired their skepticism of the association's certification program and questioned the credibly of the organization's leaders and instructors. Smith's email. unsurprisingly. mentions none of this.

The fact that Smith takes the time to specifically include a few of her own marketing messages within the email comes off as a little smarmy, giving the impression that Smith is more focused on an uninterrupted revenue stream than on what effect the dissolution of ISMA will have on its members. Seriously, Mari, was it necessary to remind us that Fast Company once called you "the pied piper of the online world" in this particular email? And the plugs for your own programs, classes and webinars? Perhaps you could have, for the sake of sensitivity, skipped the self-promotion just this once.

In Smith's defense, though, she does address many key issues head-on in the email, detailing how membership refunds will be calculated and distributed, and how webinar content will be archived and saved for future access.

Still, it all seems very sudden and awkward.

Full text of the email follows.

############

Dear [ISMA Member]

I have very important information to share with you – this is a wee bit of a challenging message to write, so please bear with me:

After much deliberation, Mark and I have decided to dissolve the International Social Media Association. There are many reasons behind this decision and it certainly wasn't an easy one to make.

Mark and I have thoroughly enjoyed this journey together with you. And, certainly, between the two of us – along with Mark's entire family – much effort has gone into building ISMA to this point.

However, like I say, there are a number of reasons we have chosen to wind up our partnership in ISMA.

In order to communicate this transition in person and answer any questions you may have, I will be LIVE on Ustream today,
Friday, April 30th at 1:00pm PST / 4:00pm EST.

Do pop in any time if you can at http://marismith.tv

I will likely broadcast live for approximately 90 minutes.

The show will be recorded and the replay will be available at the same link if you're unable to join me live.

I also invite you to read this blog post: http://marismith.com/isma-what-went-right

Here's what's important to both Mark and I that you know: we absolutely value and treasure your trust in us and in ISMA during
your membership. We are grateful for your support and encouragement, and all your generous feedback on the incredible guest experts we've been able to bring you each week on the member calls.

You're bound to have some questions, [member]. So, let's go over a few important logistical points so you know how we are
taking care of you during this transition:

Pro-rated refunds:

Any member of ISMA who paid in full will receive a pro-rated refund of your membership dues paid. If you paid a year in advance, please be on
the lookout for another message from us with a note of your refunded fees.

Monthly members will receive a pro-rated refund if any dues were paid in advance for May. Otherwise, for all monthly paying members – your
recurring billing has been canceled and no further fees will be processed.

Membership content:

You are more than welcome to go back and listen to and/or download any of the MP3 recordings at this link:
http://www.ismaconnects.org/?page=pastteleseminars

Webinars may be viewed at this link:
http://www.ismaconnects.org/Default.asp?page=webinarreplay

We will be taking down the membership site on May 15, 2010. After that date, ismaconnects.org will direct to marismith.com/isma.

Ongoing support for all ISMA members:

I continue to lead my membership program, Social Marketing Method, where members receive a live monthly webinar with the latest social
media information, tools, tips and updates in the social media industry, plus Q&A.

All sessions are recorded and members may access all replay archives. This program is now in its third year so we have plenty archives. Plus, I will shortly be adding much of the content from the ISMA member calls.

If you're not already a member of SMM and would like to be – stay tuned, I have something special for ISMA members.

LIVE Social Media Event

Also, if you'd like to meet me in San Diego, I will be leading my next live two-day bootcamp, Social Marketing Mastery IMMERSION and would love to see you there if you're able to join me. The dates are June 11-12 and again September 3-4. Also, I will be opening up my Mentor With Mari v2.0 program in the summer.

For all our Certified ISMA grads, be sure to see the separate email I sentyou with a super invitation to join me at a reunion in June!

…in closing:

Let me just say, [member], from my heart to yours – I am deeply grateful for this profound opportunity to go for my dreams and birth
an amazing social media association. I couldn't have done it without the relentless support of Mark Eldridge and his family. And, we couldn't have come this far without you.

Closing a door is never easy. Yet, as you well know, another door always opens. This isn't an ending – it's a beginning.

I look forward to chatting with you later today if you're free to pop in at MariSmith.tv – 1pm PST / 4pm EST – where I'll be providing additional
information and answering questions about the ISMA transition.

Much love,

Mari
