I think the business you are in would affect this data wildly, but some clear trends do emerge. People become fans of your business so they can feel they are “part of the gang”. Giving them inside info and/or deals is a great way to offer them exclusivity and in turn have them turn around and evangelize on your behalf.

So far I have avoided the urge to go to the Twitter web site, create a login, and start tweeting or twittering or whatever it is called. But I *do* very much like being on the email list for retailers and other companies that I respect and value my relationship with. Customer loyalty is reinforced every time one of my preferred companies sends me an email.
